About the Berea Union Depot

A restored piece of history, a great place to eat!

The depot with a train in the stationWe are proud to serve you from the historic Berea Union Depot, est. 1876, an important part of local history and economic development.  Come see the massive sandstone blocks from local Berea quarries that create both imposing and beautiful interior walls. Eat in our trackside dining room where in 1876 you would have been waiting on the train platform. During the more agreeable months, relax on our outdoor patio and enjoy one of the country's most active tracks just feet from your table! Not into trainspotting today? The thick walls and relative distance from the tracks in our "Main Bar", "Tap Room", "Platform" dining room, and "Junction" dining room keeps the sounds of passing commerce to a low rumble - enough to add to the ambiance but not enough to interrupt your lively conversation.

The Depot

Text from the Historical Marker in front of the building: "The Berea Union Depot, a significant hub in the railroad networks of northeast Ohio from the time of its construction in 1876 until its closing in 1958, is an unusual, but well-designed example of Victorian Gothic Architecture. With the development of an expanding stone quarry industry in the area, Berea and its railroad facilities grew rapidly and by the early 1870s developers and townspeople alike called for construction of a new passenger and freight station. When this Berea sandstone station was completed and then dedicated on May 3, 1876, the Cleveland Plain Dealer called the building "the finest facility outside the big cities." From 1958 until 1980, the building remained closed until it began a second life, restored as a restaurant and gathering place."

We are proud and honored to bring activity back into this incredible old building. The massive sandstone blocks that make up 30 Depot Street have seen countless trains, untold tons of freight, and hordes of passengers. It has thrived as the Pufferbelly and The Station restaurant.  We respect that history while at the same time we bring a new menu, a clean new look, and new life to this important location as the Berea Union Depot Taverne!
